the squid-tier architecture

read A New Kind of Tiered Architecture and noticed that it basically acknowledges the roll of Squid caching servers as a part of scaling network applications. there is some mention the article about abstracting the Squid example (see presentation) to another level (would it be 'higher level'?), but i'm not sure that improves anything.
i also like the reference to the The Ten Commandments for SOA Salvation.
